Cannot get Cairo working on R install on CentOs 5.7 -

i trying cairo package r 3.0.1 work on centos 5.7 (yes know; it's i've been given work with!). cannot r find cairo. i've installed cairo , pango , pixman. can 'locate' them. when try re-install r, find in config long after running ./configure:

r_cv has_cairo=no r_cv_has_pangocairo=no

what, precisely, causing them not found configure? can shed light on this, can try fix problem. thanks!

use latest r 3.0.2 , gcc-4.8.0 can install successful.
